What is Astro?
Astro is an open-source web framework for content-driven websites. Pages are built into pure HTML in advance or on the server. JavaScript is only loaded for parts that really need to be interactive, the so-called islands architecture. Content from a CMS, Markdown or an API is turned into fast, lightweight pages.
Why Astro?
Minimal JavaScript
Only interactive parts load scripts. The rest is pure HTML, so the page is there instantly.
Strong in SEO
Complete HTML for search engines and AI crawlers, with excellent Core Web Vitals.
Flexible with content
Works with any headless CMS, Markdown or your own API. Editors manage the content, we keep an eye on speed.
What we use it for
- ABusiness websites and landing pages
- BBlogs, knowledge bases and documentation
- CMarketing sites with a headless CMS
- DMultilingual websites
When do you choose Astro?
Choose Astro when your website mainly shows content and speed and findability come first. If the site gets a lot of logged-in or personalised functionality, we recommend Next.js.
Astro or Next.js?
Astro is built for content: as little JavaScript as possible, as fast as possible. Next.js is built for applications with interaction, accounts and dynamic data. For a business website we usually choose Astro, for a website with a logged-in area Next.js.
