What is Valkey?
Valkey is an open-source in-memory data store that emerged in 2024 as a continuation of Redis under the Linux Foundation. It is compatible with Redis commands and protocols, so existing clients and libraries just work. Valkey keeps data in memory and therefore responds within a fraction of a millisecond.
Why Valkey?
Truly open source
BSD licence under the Linux Foundation. No licence changes or vendor lock-in.
Drop-in replacement for Redis
Existing Redis clients and code work without changes.
Extremely fast
Responses in a fraction of a millisecond, even under heavy load.
What we use it for
- ACaching of pages and API results
- BSessions and rate limiting
- CQueues for background tasks
- DReal-time counters and notifications
When do you choose Valkey?
Valkey is our standard choice for caching in new projects. Choose it when you want the speed of Redis with a fully open-source licence.
Valkey or Redis?
Functionally they are close and the clients are interchangeable. For new projects we choose Valkey because of its open licence. If Redis is already running, or you use specific Redis modules, we stick with Redis.
